perceptual transparency | transparent overlapping planes
Photographic collage exploring Cubist vision and transparency in infrastructure. Transparency is the quality of being transparent; having the property of transmitting light, so as to render bodies lying behind completely visible; that which can be seen through simultaneity; inter-penetration; superimposition; ambivalence; space-time; “…transparency however implies more than an optical characteristic, it implies a broader spatial order. Transparency means a simultaneous perception of different spatial locations. Space not only recedes but fluctuates in a continuous activity. The position of the transparent figures has equivocal meaning as one sees each figure now as the closer, now as the further one.” (Transparency and interpenetration. Gyorgy Kepes, Language of Vision, 1944: 77)
studies of light | darkroom chemical photography
Black and white chemical photographic prints. Photo-sensitive paper is exposed to bursts of light with a flashlight. Resulting photographs are then used to make negative prints. The positive and negative images are superimposed and results are studied.
sign unseen | digital photographs
Sign Unseen is a documentary photographic series examining the difference between physical reality and perceived reality based in Kensington Market in Toronto. Two views are documented, one view is taken from sidewalk directly in front of the store, and the other view is taken from across the street looking at the stores sign. When signs are no longer the main communicative means, the merchandise itself then becomes both the signifier and the signified – simultaneously taking on the role of both the sign and the product.
